Makeup That Feeds Your Skin

I am just not a foundation fan. Not for everyday wear. There are a few reasons I’ve come to this conclusion. As a youngster I was overly observant of makeup and fashion, as I could not wait to become a woman and experience these things. I noticed too many women with the caked on look, where you could see the line of demarcation from face to neck. This really creeped me out. As I grew older I worked on the set of a soap opera for a few years and as a result of daily heavy makeup I was left with lots of acne and some scarring. Also I like to look as if I’m not wearing any makeup, whether I am or not. Of course my skin is this perfect! This is the magic of these products. I know there are fabulous foundations on the market, but most are just too heavy for everyday use. Don’t get me wrong, if I’m going somewhere I know I will be photographed I will wear foundation for greater coverage. But for going to work, running around with the kids or dinner with my husband I’d rather look like me, just smoother, brighter and younger. With that said, there are a slew of amazing products that do just that. And some with the added anti aging benefits of treating your skin. Crazy, I know.

The best products to happen to my skin since my early 20’s have been tinted moisturizer, BB and CC cream, and now blur cream. They are not as heavy as foundation, but provide a “veil” that blurs your flaws while adding moisture and/or color correction. I will tell you a bit about each and share my favorite brands with you. Fortunately, there are inexpensive options for each of these products along with the higher end products. You may still need a bit of concealer with these formulas, but they boast broad protection sunscreen, moisturizers and active anti aging ingredients along with smooth, sheer coverage. You can’t get much better than that.

1. Tinted Moisturizer

What it is:

A perfect blend of skincare and makeup that hydrates skin and softens fine lines with a sheer hint of color for a healthy, dewy glow.

What else you need to know:

“I created this product because I wanted to give skin a fresh, healthy, no-makeup look with a soft hint of color that evens and enhances without hiding the skin.”—Laura Mercier

My favorite:

Laura Mercier Tinted Foundation (I’ve been using the oil free formula, SPF 20)

2. BB Cream

What it is:

BB Creams were formulated to be a hybrid of five or six beauty products in one. They have characteristics of moisturizer, primer, concealer, sunscreen, foundation and treatment in one container. They nourish your skin with ingredients such as antioxidants and hyaluronic acid. I found that my skin almost feels better when I take it off at night, like it has been working it’s magic all day. You can layer it for more heavy coverage or wear it alone for a light concealing of flaws. These formulas are quite a bit heavier than tinted moisturizers and run the risk of looking cakey if too much is applied. I have also found that they are not as moisturizing because of the added ingredients. All in all, it is a great purchase available in extremely affordable brands (L’oreal Photoready BB or Maybelline Dreamfresh BB are the best drug store brands) or as high end as you can afford (Dior, Stila).

What else you need to know:

“The idea of a well-formulated BB cream is that it’s the only product you’ll need after you wash your face,” says Ni’Kita Wilson, a cosmetic chemist at Englewood Lab in New Jersey.

My favorite:

Stila 10-in-1 HD beauty balm cream (I use the bronzing balm in summer, illuminating the rest of the year for an amazing glow)

3. CC Cream

What it is:

Extremely similar to BB cream, CC stands for “color correcting”. These products are marketed to address skin issues such as redness or hyper pigmentation. They usually use light diffusing particles to even out tone and add a filter of sorts. These products tend to be a little bit lighter on the skin and have a more fluffy feel, taking the performance one step up from BB Cream. Just be sure to read the description and try a sample if you can when shopping. I have experienced a dramatic difference in coverage and performance from different brands.

What else you need to know:

“Like BB creams they boast hydrating properties, SPF protection and semi-sheer coverage, but with the added benefit of colour-correcting technology to improve uneven skin tones.”

My favorite:

Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream (very light and breathable coverage, but with amazing moisture for the dewy look)

4. Blur Cream

What it is:

This is the newest of the hybrids and is supposed to take the “Instagram filter” look one step further. These products are packed with skin care ingredients; some even contain retinol, so the anti aging power is over the top. Imagine a product that fights lines and masks them at the same time, with light reflecting particles that trick the eye into seeing a beautiful, dewy glow.

What you need to know:

“Blur creams really are the closest you’ll get to a permanent Instagram filter for your face.”

My favorite:

Lancome Visionnaire 1 Minute Blur (pricey but it could stand alone as an intense anti-aging cream containing retinol)
